The Red Sox made their first move of the annual July 31st trade deadline friendzy this afternoon, trading Yamaico Novarro and pitching prospect Kendal Volz to the Royals in exchange for infielder Mike Aviles.
Aviles is hitting .222 in 53 games with the Royals. He’s an above average defensive infielder, who is versatile, making starts at second base, shortstop, and third base this season. He has also been used as a designated hitter four times in 2011.
Aviles does have offensive potential, hitting .324 with 10 homers as a rookie in 2008, and batting a more than respectable .304 in 2010.
