Ben Cherington reportedly the next Red Sox GM

Posted by Stephen Bailey on October 13, 2011

With Theo Epstein headed to Chicago, Ben Cherington will be filling the void as the Red Sox general manager, according to a tweet from Yahoo! Sports’ Tim Brown.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise to most as Cherington was expected to be strongly considered for the position. He has been with Boston since 1997 and filled in for Epstein in 2005 as a co-general manager, working alongside Jed Hoyer.

Cherington has big shoes to fill as Epstein helped end “The Curse of the Bambino” in 2004, leading the Sox to their first World Series championship in 86 years. He followed that up with another title in ’07.

See Cherington (left) with Hoyer (middle) and Larry Lucchino (right) in the picture to the above.
