Bailey’s Bites 5/12

Posted by Stephen Bailey on May 12, 2010

Jason Varitek hit ANOTHER homer last night, his 6th in 38 at bats. He currently is tied for 17th in longballs hit in the American League, and first in home runs per at bat (6.33) in the majors. I realize he is Victor’s backup, but hey the guy is hitting. I’d like to see Tito get him more time.

The Sox also won against the Yanks Sunday night. That was Boston’s first non-sweep series since facing the Orioles April 23-25. It never ceases to amaze me just how inconsistent the Boston Red Sox can be.

On paper, the rotation looks great. At the start of the season, my optimistic side thought we might even have 4 of the top pitchers in the league in Lester, Beckett, Lackey, and Bucholz. Lester currently holds the lowest ERA at 3.71. I don’t trust any one of them more than the next. Heck, last night Dice-K probably recorded Boston’s best start of the year, allowing only one run on three hits, while striking out nine batters.

The Celtics win last night was more than impressive. They answered a lot of questions with that performance. They are legit contenders. You could hear a pin drop in the Q last night it was so quiet. Boston’s 32 point margin of victory is the largest in Cavs playoff history.

After Rondo’s triple-double in Game 4, the Big Three combined for 64 in Game 5. Pierce, Allen, and KG are not done, they are up 3-2 against LeBron, the Cavs, and the refs! Now that is an impressive feat.

This is quickly becoming a favorite quote of mine: “Truth is like the sun. You can shut it out for a time, but it ain’t goin’ away.”  Elvis may not have been referring to Paul Pierce, but I can pretend, can’t I?

The city of Cleveland is in serious trouble. If they lose this series, LeBron is as good as gone, as is coach Mike Brown. I believe the supporting cast is not that weak. Mo Will and Jamison are just under performing terribly. Both are getting abused defensively as well.

Hopefully the B’s can close out the series tonight…The Wachovia Center is really a mild environment, even in the playoffs. The key to the game will be Rask. If he holds down the fort, Boston will pull through. He can’t allow any more four goal games.
