Despite only playing a season and a half in Boston, Tony Delk was a big contributor in the C’s postseason run in 2002, when the team made the Eastern Conference Finals.
Delk came over in a trade with Rodney Rodgers from Phoenix midway through the 2001-02 campaign. The Suns received Milt Palacio, Randy Brown, and Joe Johnson in exchange for Delk and Rodgers. Now, looking back on it, it probably was a bad trade for Boston since Johnson has become a great player.
Delk played 22 games for the C’s in the 2001-02, averaging 7.4 PPG and 2.3 APG. In 14 postseason games that season, Delk posted 4.7 PPG and 1.1 APG en route to reaching the Eastern Conference Finals.
Delk had an even better season in 2002-03. He played in 67 games, compiling totals of 9.8 PPG and 2.2 APG.
Delk would sign with the Dallas Mavericks the following season and retired from professional basketball after the 2005-06 season. In his 10 year career that saw him play for eight different teams (Charlotte Hornets, Golden State Warriors, Sacramento Kings, Phoenix Suns, Boston Celtics, Dallas Mavericks, Atlanta Hawks, and Detroit Pistons), Delk averaged totals of 9.1 PPG, 2.5 RPG, and 1.9 APG.
Currently, Delk serves as the assistant basketball coach at New Mexico State University.
