The Countdown: 68 Days Left ‘Til the Regular Season

Posted by Stephen Bailey on August 19, 2010
This is the first of many upcoming posts that will focus around the ever-nearing NBA regular season. This off-season has been a wild one, with LeBron James and his betrayal of Cleveland, Pat Riley assembling quite possibly the most dominant roster in professional sports history, and the other contenders scrambling to keep up with South Florida’s fiery acquisitions. On a side note regarding the selfish nation-wide announcement of the King without a crown, I recently came across this Paul Pierce quote. He said this after re-signing with Boston this off-season, “Everybody knew I was coming back. I didn’t need a special.”

Personally, I have never been a fan of free agency, the draft, and whatnot. The fact that some teams (i.e. Knicks and Nets) essentially play for the off-season sickens me. When my beloved Celtics tanked it towards the end of pre-Big Three era seasons to secure a top spot in the draft, I questioned how I could root for this team. Watching blowout loss after blowout loss with guys like Vin Baker, Marcus Banks, and Orien Greene on the floor made my eyes burn terribly.

I’m ready to watch basketball again. Scratch that, I’ve been ready to watch basketball since 10 minutes after Game 7 of the NBA Finals. Between my new found sense of boredom towards baseball and the dramatic end of the 09-10 season, opening night against the Heat can’t come soon enough. And yet, there are still 68 days until Boston takes to the hardwood again.

Check in for more of the countdown and a pre-season power rankings as the free agency season comes to a close.
